01×01: Pilot

So this report was written by Dana. And right away there are several issues that really irk me about this case file. Mulder and Scully fly to Oregon to investigate the case of four dead girls. Good cause. Now if they could actually solve the freaking case. In the file it states that Dana Scully was assigned to work with Mulder in order to shut down the X-files. Right away, I question the existence of the X-files in the first place. The report doesn’t explain why Division Chief Blevins doesn’t shut it down. In fact, Blevins enables the whole thing by providing them with a seemingly limitless budget!

So here we go.

03/07/1992 8:00AM

Mulder and Scully fly to Oregon. Now we have a dilemma here already.

  1. Mulder and Scully are in what looks like first class?
  2. Mulder, who doesn’t even own a bed, lies down and takes up 3 airplane seats. 3!!!!!
  3. The report gives a false city name as a destination!
Fox unnecessarily taking up 3 airplane seats! Flight cost ~$748

If this were my job, I’d be fired on the spot, but not these two. Now, based on the seats on the plane there is some discrepancy if they are in first class or business class. I’ve given them the benefit of the doubt and calculated business class, and I did not charge Agent Mulder for taking up 3 seats, which in this day and age would get you kicked off the plane.

Anyway, the city we are given is “Bellefleur, Oregon in Raymon County”. Both places DON’T EXIST. So I did my best to figure it out. In the report it makes frequent mention of a “Raymon County Psychiatric Hospital” and mentions the Oregonian coast. We also know that they went to the woods so I’ve narrowed it down to Redmond Oregon, plus it’s similar to Raymon. It’s also near an airport. So I’ve used the Redmond Municipal Airport, Sage View Psychiatric Center, The Redmond Inn and the Riverhouse on the Deschutes.

Raymon County and Bellefleur Oregon are not “real” places. Dana fabricated these names in her report

The downside? This is ~200 miles from the coast, which is mentioned in the report, however it’s only mentioned once and not significantly so that could also be a fabrication.

3/07/1992: We have a confirmed night stay with 2 hotel rooms in Oregon priced at ~$126. They’ve rented a 4-door Navy Blue Ford Taurus which is most likely a mid-size rental at ~$60 per day.

The rental car; a 90’s Ford Taurus, most likely a mid-size rental. Cost ~$60/day

3/08/1992:  These agents on this day went to the “Raymon County Psychiatric Hospital” which NEVER EXISTED! I’ve chosen Sage View Psychiatric Hospital due to its proximity to Mulder and Scully’s location.

Now here’s something interesting. Their hotel room is presumably set on fire, according to the report. However, these agents (who aren’t romantically involved supposedly) had LIT CANDLES IN THEIR HOTEL ROOM. Just after the photo below was taken these two left their hotel in a hurry. Then upon returning to their hotel their report claims “someone set it on fire”….

After leaving their hotel with 2 lit candles inside, Dana claims “someone set it on fire…”

Please remember everyone to practice common sense when lighting candles in your homes.

Anyway, this fire resulted in Scully’s laptop being destroyed. This could be why we have false names in the report for the places they visited since she filed her report obviously on this computer. Of note, in other files I’ve come across on these agents, they use Macbooks. And in 1992 this computer of hers in today’s money would cost… $4230.16! The computer I think she owned was a 1991 Apple Macintosh PowerBook. This is being generous since other laptops at this time were even more expensive.

1991 Apple Power Book, most likely Dana’s computer at the time. Cost ~$4230.16

It’s unclear if Fox and Dana stayed at another hotel after this one burnt down since they were in Oregon for just 24 more hours; however since they were outside in the rain and later Dana’s hair is done. So I charged another night.

3/22/1992: So nearly a month later these agents decided to fly Billy Miles to the FBI headquarters in DC for questioning. Clearly at this point Fox and Dana’s superiors already thought their case was not worth the funding, but again, paid for this unnecessary travel.

Billy Miles unnecessarily being flown from Oregon to DC for some informal questioning. Flights cost ~This flight cost round trip ~$552.

So we have a few things I am not addressing for the totals. I am not a lawyer; I am going to assume insurance will cover fire damage due to candles being left lit unattended. While my focus is travel; I am factoring in the cost of Dana’s laptop (you can see my breakdown without this if you click the link).

So the totals for their shenanigans in Oregon that did not find any definitive cause of death for 4 young women is a whopping $7112.16.

And that, my friends is only the beginning. I started this blog after seeing a report that Dana, in a single case in the 90’s, took 8 flights between DC and Nevada. And this case was not authorized by her superiors.

Below is a map I created of their locations on this case.

Episode Total: $7,112.16
